Lorne has long been known as the premier tourist resort city along Victoria's Surf Coast on the Great Ocean Road. It's a perfect spot to stop off if you are doing a tour of the Great Ocean Road and is ideal to use as a base from which to explore all that this fantastic region has to offer. The township of Lorne is surrounded by the Great Otway National Park which in the close vicinity is home to quite a few spectacular waterfalls, including Lorne's most famous - Erskine Falls. This hinterland area of Lorne has some great walks and is home to a host of wildlife including a healthy, resident population of koalas. What makes Lorne different to many other coastal towns is that not only does it have a fantastic beach and main street, with shops, cafes and numerous fine restaurants, but the fact that it has a temperate rainforest, waterfalls, rivers and walking tracks, which all run down to the sea at Lorne. Day trippers and people who don't know Lorne often don't realise this and as a result may book for only one night or decide to just pass through. Lorne really does deserve more than just one night. The beach at Lorne has appeal to a wide clientelle. Fishermen, swimmers, windsurfers and surfers alike all relish in what this secluded bay can offer. These days during the winter months you will often find Southern Right Whales frolicking in the bay. Families love Lorne because it is so safe for children. Not only is it patrolled in summer but it is a shallow beach and the surf is not dangerous like it is on many other beaches along the coast. The foreshore is the centre for children's games and all beachside action. There's an adventure playground, trampolines, a swimming pool and a skate park. Wherever you are in Lorne and from wherever you are looking, the views are simply magical, both of the coast and the hinterland. Lorne has so much to offer both for families and couples. It has loads of cafes and restaurants, some very sophisticated and some more family orientated and a wide variety of shops to cater to all tastes and budgets.
